Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings is considered the pinnacle of fantasy filmmaking, making Jackson a name as a director as well as the numerous production companies that have worked on this film— but what if the trilogy was created as an animated feature by Pixar instead?
This is the question Instagram user Benmornin sought to answer with a series of images showing the original Fellowship (plus Arwen bonus) rendered in Pixar’s iconic cartoon style.
While the renderings are clearly based on actors appearing in PJ’s trilogy, the style is more reminiscent of Ralph Bakshi’s Lord Of The Rings animated film from 1978.
The renderings are AI-generated using Midjourney, as part of a trend that has seen many popular brands receive similar treatment. Benmornin also created Pixar-style Star Warswhile Reddit user Ozdemirburak showed another role in The Lord of the Rings, which was animated by Pixar including Gollum and Galadriel.
If you were hoping for a full movie in this style, Joe Russo of the Russo Brothers has estimated that the AI should be able to create a “very authoritative” 90-minute film. within the next two years–although there are many ethical hurdles and concerns to consider before that becomes a reality.
