Southbound section of freeway 5 closed overnight to repair landslide damage



According to the California Department of Transportation, a section of Highway 5 will be closed completely overnight so workers can repair landslide damage.

Michael Comeaux, a department spokesman, said all southbound lanes between Vista Del Lago Road and the Templin Expressway in the southern portion of Grapevine will be closed Monday through Thursday.

The closure near Castaic will take place from 10pm to 5am every night. Another closure is scheduled to begin at 11:59pm. Saturday and ends at 8am the next morning.

Southbound traffic will detour east onto Highway 138 and southbound onto Highway 14 to return to the southbound expressway, Caltrans said in a statement.

The two southbound lanes will reopen each morning after closing.

Mr. Comeaux said the landslide was first observed on March 21 and expanded over the next few days, reaching the southern shoulder on March 29. Repair work will control damage at the site. point and involves paved and re-cut the affected area of ​​the road.

Work also continues on a nearby stretch of northbound highway, which was damaged in January when a hillside saturated with wet weather collapsed – causing part of the slope to collapse. into the two lanes on the right.
