TODAY: As expected, Colorado placed Senzatela on the injured list for 15 days (effective May 11). Anderson was put on the active list to take the place of Senzatela.
May 12: Rockies start Antonio Senzatela diagnosed with a sprained elbow in his pitching elbow, club officials informed reporters (relayed by Thomas Harding belong to MLB.com). The problem won’t require surgery, but manager Bud Black said the right-hander will not be thrown for three weeks.
That makes a trip to the 15-day injury list inevitable. Most likely Senzatela finds himself in the 60-day IL, as he will have to rebuild through a throw program after a three-week shutdown period. Senzatela told Harding that he is expected to be sidelined for at least two months, making it unlikely that he will return to Coors Field before the All-Star Vacation.
While it’s fortunate he won’t be under the knife, the 28-year-old will be out with a lingering injury for a second straight season. Senzatela’s 2022 campaign was cut short in August when he tore the ACL in his left knee. His recovery extended into this year and kept him out of his season debut until last Friday. Two starts later, Senzatela left the competition Wednesday with a tight forearm.
He only scored 7 2/3 innings during the season. The Venezuelan-born hurdler had a tough campaign in 22 even before his knee injury, allowing for an ERA of 5.07 out of 92 1/3 frames. Senzatela has managed a respectable 4.11 ERA with a high 51.1% grounding in the previous two seasons. In October 2021, the Rockies signed him to a $50.5 million extension to potentially buy up 4 years of free agency. They have not received much return on that investment so far.
This is the second absence due to a prolonged injury for a key Colorado player. Rox lost Germany Marquez for the season when it was announced that he would require Tommy John surgery. Black told reporters that Márquez underwent that procedure today (via Kyle Newman of the Denver Post). He’s set to play in 2024 and will likely make one last appearance as a Rockie, as his part of his guaranteed contract expires after this season. Colorado keeps the $16 million option for next season but figures will buy back $2.5 million instead.
Kyle Freeland, Austin Gomber And Ryan Feltner each made more than seven turns through the wheel. Only Freeland has thrown the ball particularly well. Colorado released the struggle José Urena there are only four starts in the year, while each Márquez, Senzatela and Noah Davis (elbow inflammation) not due to trauma. The Rockies have moved to pick up off-season deals Connor Seabold for a few outings and declare veteran hurdler Chase Anderson exempt from the Rays this morning.
