Police shoot man outside Acura Grand Prix in Long Beach

According to authorities, police shot a man outside the Acura Grand Prix track in Long Beach on Sunday afternoon while responding to a call about shootings in the area.

The Long Beach Police Department responded to a “missing shot” at 3rd Street and Elm Avenue around 4:45 p.m., near the popular downtown Long Beach street race.

Minutes later, an officer on patrol heard gunshots near Ocean Avenue and Elm Avenue and spotted a man on suspicion of shooting, police spokesman Allison Gallagher said. Police shot the man shortly afterwards, hitting his upper body, authorities said.

Gallagher said the man had “non-life threatening injuries” and was taken to hospital. No officers were injured. A handgun was recovered at the scene.

As of Sunday night, it was not clear what prompted police to shoot the man dead.

Police are also investigating two nearby shootings reported earlier Sunday afternoon: one on the 600th block of Ocean Avenue, where no one was hit, and another on the 700th block on Ocean Avenue. Atlantic Avenue, where a man was hit by a bullet, Gallagher said.

Police believe the same person could be responsible for all of the incidents, Gallagher said.
