Ghostbusters: Afterlife in 2021 leaves the door open for more ghosts to sneak in, as well as a sequel. Although Sony Pictures did not provide any footage, they did share what appear to be new plot developments for the upcoming film.
In place of the film’s footage, stars Carrie Coon and Paul Rudd appeared in a video with director Jason Reitman and writer Gil Kenan alongside young Ghostbusters Finn Wolfhard and Mckenna Grace; The entire family, including Rudd and Coon, are dressed in iconic khaki outfits. The video depicts them as a family, which suggests that Coon and Rudd’s characters have become stuck between the two films after their cute spooky encounter in the first.
Reitman and Co. talked about the sequel before Ghostbusters: Afterlife hit theaters. Keenan says that “there are so many surprising ways that the future and the past can evolve together, side by side and separately.” at the time of the Afterlife release.
The sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife doesn’t have an official title yet. Stars Mckenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard, Paul Rudd and Carrie Coon will all reprise their roles, and actors Patton Oswalt (Young Adult) and Kumail Nanjiani (The Big Sick) will also appear in the film. Kenan will direct the script, which he co-wrote with Reitman. Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2 is currently set to hit theaters on December 20, 2023.
