I ended up on the wrong flight home from holiday in Turkey – I only realised after making innocent remark

ONE PASSENGER returning to the UK from Turkey almost avoided a huge mistake when he sat down and realized he had boarded the wrong plane.

Matt Hodgetts, 56, from West Bromwich, West Midlands, was on his way home from a two-week overseas trip when he realized he had boarded his next flight. gatwick instead of Birmingham.

The van driver was just curious about something amiss when he made an innocent remark to the other passengers as they prepared to take off.

Matt told The Sun Online: “I went over the air bridge, stepped on the plane, showed my boarding pass and sat down.

“I can hear all these cockney voices but I don’t think about it.

“I said ‘I can’t wait to go back to Birmingham’ and they all smiled at me and people started laughing, and they said ‘you mean Gatwick?’ and ‘I said you have to joke with me’.

“I couldn’t believe it and I thought maybe they were looking at me, the other passengers, thinking ‘what’s going on here?’

“Then I heard ‘the captain talking’, and he said ‘Gatwick’.

“As soon as I heard Gatwick, I got up from my island seat and said ‘I’m going to Birmingham, I’m not going anywhere near Gatwick’.”

Matt came to visit Turkey with friends and booked to fly home to Birmingham on Tui flight TOM415 at 8:50pm on 29 October.

The group checked in together but was separated by security when he was pulled aside for police to check his insulin bag.

He said that after coming out of that “severe 15 minutes” he made his way to the gate.

Once processed, Matt showed his passport and boarding pass to security officers.

He said: “She said ‘go straight down’, so that’s what I did, I followed everyone down.

“You know what it’s like in airports, you’re retired when you pass.”

Matt said he showed an EasyJet flight attendant his boarding pass for his Tui flight but no one realized he had boarded the wrong plane.

Instead, Matt said Matt was asked to move seats so a family could sit in the chair he was allotted.

He explained: “I said ’21A’, she said ‘did you come here alone?’ I said ‘yes’, she said ‘can you switch seats because there is a family that wants to sit together’, I said ‘it’s okay, she said ’19c already'”.

But when he got to 19C, someone else took the same seat, so he was given another seat on the island.

Matt said: “I walked down, went to my rearranged seat, 19C instead of 21A and it was full. I said ‘I was just asked to sit at 19C because someone else took my seat’, because so they say ‘no’. Don’t worry about it, just sit there.”

‘BLIMEY’

When he finally realized he was going to land about 118 miles away from where he really wanted to go, he went to the front of the plane.

“I had to wait about five minutes, because they removed the gate, and they had to put it back together and open the door,” he said.

“I panicked and said to the flight attendant ‘is my flight to Birmingham not yet gone?’ I’m sure she said ‘this is EasyJet, we’re going to Gatwick.”

They reconnected the bridge and Matt was led to the corridor he should have turned down in preparation for his flight.

He said: “It’s funny but I thought ‘oh my god, I can’t believe I actually got on the plane.

“I’m glad my plane didn’t take off. I was so relieved.”

An EasyJet spokesperson told The Sun Online that the matter was dealt with promptly and apologizes for the inconvenience.

“We are investigating with Dalaman Airport and with the partner airline that is operating this flight on behalf of EasyJet,” he said.

“Shortly after realizing the mistake, prior to departure, the passenger was transferred to the correct flight on which they were boarding at the same time through the same gate and we apologize for any inconvenience caused.

“Since the passenger has completed the security check, there is no problem that the safety of the flight is affected.

“The safety of our passengers is always our highest priority.”
