Before the Sega Genesis, Sega tried to compete with Nintendo in the console market with the SG-1000 and the Sega Master System, or Mark 3. However, the SG-1000 was completely crushed by the Famicom that released at the same time. The Sega Master system was completely overtaken with the release of Super Mario Brothers 3.
Sega tried to create their own mascot to compete with Mario, and Kotaro Hayashida came up with Alex Kidd. While Alex Kidd continues to do pretty well for Sega, it can’t quite match Super Mario Brothers. But, fortunately, with Genesis, Naoto Oshima and Yuji Naka had a certain green streak in the work.
