Gerwig and Robbie apparently approached Gadot about joining the Barbie lineup, but unfortunately she wasn’t available to produce. Luckily, the Barbies we’ll see in the movie are bursting with that adorable Barbie energy. Joining Robbie’s traditional Malibu Barbie are Issa Rae as President Barbie, Hari Nef as Doctor Barbie, Alexandra Shipp as Barbie Writer, Emma Mackey as Barbie Physicist, Sharon Rooney as Lawyer Barbie, Dua Lipa as Mermaid Barbie, Nicola Coughlan as Diplomat Barbie, Ana Cruz Kayne as Judge Barbie, Ritu Arya as Journalist Barbie, and Kate McKinnon as Bizarre Barbie. Emerald Fennell and Michael Cera join as Barbie and Ken’s best friends Midge and Allanwhile Kingsley Ben-Adir, Simu Liu, Scott Evans and Ncuti Gatwa appear as different Ken dolls.
Based on the trailer alone, it’s clear that everyone in the cast knows exactly what movie they’re starring in and what kind of energy they’ll bring: Big smiles, open hearts, and maybe is a bit empty behind the eyes, but still a character you want to be your best friend. Had the movie “Barbie” been made earlier, someone like Jennifer Garner or Anne Hathaway would have been perfectly suited to play Barbie Girl, but as we discussed on /Film, Greta Gerwig was born to direct this movie.
