The Coquihalla motorway was reopened in both directions following an incident the RCMP called “ongoing and ongoing” the previous Tuesday.
The highway between Hope and Merritt, BC, was closed around 2:30 p.m. Pacific time, when police reported in a written statement that “a large number of police forces from the surrounding is being sent to the Juliet Bridge area, just south of Merritt near the summit of Coquihalla.”
Four hours later, it was reopened when the RCMP reported that the “incident” was over but said it would not release any further information about what happened.
“We thank all the motorists for their patience,” said Sgt. Chris Manseau said in a written statement. “The investigation into the necessity of the closure is still ongoing and the public can expect to see a marked increase in police vehicles in the area.”
In an earlier interview, RCMP Sgt. Josh Roda declined to confirm more details about the incident but said it is not believed to be related a kidnapping and a series of shootings in Merritt, BC, this past week.
