Los Angeles police on Friday arrested a woman they believe set a fire outside the South LA police station the night before, burning down furniture, photos and the ceiling of the hallway.
The woman was arrested around 3 a.m. and charged with arson after surveillance footage tied her to a fire at the Southwest Division station on West Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, according to a spokeswoman for the Police Department. Los Angeles, Lt. Letisia Ruiz. Ruiz said patrol officers discovered the woman, 30-year-old Mishauna Eaton, about four blocks west of the police station.
Eaton is being held on a $250,000 bond, the department said.
Ruiz said Eaton was seen on video approaching the station while pushing a cart. Police did not say what led them to believe the fire was started intentionally and did not disclose a possible motive.
In a tweet, the LAPD posted photos of the damage to the front of the building and announced that the lobby would be closed indefinitely to the public.
A spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department said firefighters were dispatched around 11:22 p.m. Thursday to what initial reports said was a “garbage fire.” Within half an hour of the call, the fire was extinguished. The spokesman said arson investigators were later summoned to the scene.
