2 people injured in gas explosion at small soccer field in Lake Elsinore

Two people were injured Friday in a natural gas explosion at a small ballpark in Lake Elsinore, hours before the game.

Maggie De La Rosa, a spokeswoman for the Riverside County Fire Department, said a burst gas line caused the fire, which was quickly extinguished by sprinklers inside Diamond Stadium.

The incident was reported at 4:21 p.m., before fans entered the stadium. She added that two individuals suffered minor injuries and were taken to hospital.

Lake Elsinore Storm, the Single-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres, is set to play Inland Empire 66ers at 7:15 p.m.

The cause of the explosion is unknown and De La Rosa was unable to verify its origin.

Storm could not be immediately reached for comment, but the team has made an announcement on Twitter that matches scheduled for Friday and Saturday will be postponed until further notice “due to an incident at the stadium.”
